Across a sea of nightmares, sailing, sword in hand A crew of killers crowds the craft They thirst for thunder, thegns of Thor down to a man This ship of slayers sights your shores Storm the walls Kill them all Storm the walls Kill! A shout of “sea-men!” as the raiders shove ashore A tide of terror takes the town The gates are groaning as their guards fall in their gore To strength and song and sun on steel Storm the walls Kill them all Storm the walls Kill! Shattering skulls Shields to the sky Arrows rain down Blood-muddied fields Blood-chilling cries Burn to the ground Storm the walls Kill them all Storm the walls Kill! Storm the walls Kill them all Storm the walls Kill! Storm the walls Kill them all Storm the walls Kill! Shattering skulls Shields to the sky Arrows rain down Blood-muddied fields Blood-chilling cries Burn to the ground Storm the walls Kill them all Storm the walls Kill! Storm the walls Kill them all Storm the walls Kill!

My sword and shield uphold me But those that seek to destroy us Shall go into the lower parts of the earth They will fall by the sword. They shall be a portion for wolves. But the King will revel in the Gods And those that swear by them will find glory And invaders will perish In blood From water they waded, a wild wave surging The shield wall they shattered like shadow at daybreak As fear swept like fire through fleeing and fallen They’re beyond the wall! We darkened the sky but they swept through the shadows Til bowstrings were broken and quivers were bare We stood and we slew and left no spear unsplintered But back were we beaten, our backs to our homes Beyond the wall They killed us all Shields fell in shatters and swords sang in sunlight They washed from the walls to the streets to our wives They sang as they slew us, a song of our slaughter We fell for our families as flames filled the skies Beyond the wall They killed us all Beyond the wall They killed us all Shaft to sky and spear to shield Blade to blade and hand to hand Eye to eye and fate to fate They’re beyond the wall! The screams slipped to silence as smoke snaked from cinders The tide of their terror returned to the sea With no one to notice but nightfall and vultures They’re beyond the wall! Beyond the wall

With this sword in my hand I had conquered Like my fathers before me, I was king I had power Men were mine to command Lives I’d squander for gold like grains of sand So heavy is the head The dread of (death) Lament not (blood) This bent crown, (war) This broken throne (death) Corrupted, (blood) Untrusted, (war) I die alone With this sword in my hand I have fallen Like my fathers before me, I will die I’ve done nothing But bring death to my land All I’ve done in this world is wind on sand So heavy is the head The dread of (death) Lament not (blood) This bent crown, (war) This broken throne (death) Corrupted, (blood) Untrusted, (war) I die alone (Sire, they’re beyond the walls!) (death) Lament not (blood) This bent crown, (war) This broken throne (death) Corrupted, (blood) Untrusted, (war) I die alone (death, blood, war) (They’re beyond the walls… beyond the walls...)

about

A golden dawn has not quite broken over a petty kingdom near the sea, peopled by those who toil and forge and destroy by the strength of their own backs, unaided by as-yet-unimagined machines.

A soldier in his prime leans on his weapon and drowses at his guard post, dreaming of glorious battle in defense of his land and young family.

An aged king sinks slowly onto a worn throne, to muse upon his gold and glory, both won in petty feuds with neighboring kingdoms... and both swiftly slipping through his bent and aching fingers.

A sleek craft slashes through the gently-breaking waves, and disgorges a deadly cargo of armed and ambitious young men, singing songs of glory, and gold, and of the violence they shall do to obtain them.

Thus begins The Bent Crown - the tale of a single deed of violence, shown from the perspectives of the young and deadly raiders, the stalwart but doomed defenders, and the dying lord of a devastated land. Or rather, perhaps, it is the tale of a lifetime, from its dangerous youth, to its established prime, to the despairing dusk of advanced age…
